Toolformer showed how language models can learn to call APIs, search the web, and use calculators by teaching themselves when and how to use external tools. The model learns to insert API calls into its generated text, deciding autonomously which tool to use and when. This is the conceptual ancestor of every tool-use and function-calling agent system.
