A driver can finish a delivery and still wait hours for the next useful assignment. Dispatch teams need to look beyond the current trip: when will the driver become available, where will that happen, and which shipment can fit? Embedding Labs developed a planning application that connects availability estimates to feasible next-trip recommendations. The client hosts and operates the system internally.
01 / The work
Uncertainty reaches the person behind the wheel
Loading, unloading, travel and rest periods make availability a moving target. A shipment that looks nearby may require a certification the driver lacks, conflict with an agreement restriction or leave a long wait before pickup. Dispatchers have to reconcile these details while the day's work continues.
The wider challenge is driver retention. A useful plan should account for driver preferences, distribute earnings opportunities more thoughtfully, reduce avoidable idle time and offer a longer planning horizon. These are the goals that shaped the engagement.
02 / The work
Turn operational state into a useful next step
The application brings driver, shipment and assignment records together, estimates the driver's next availability, and evaluates candidate trips against explicit operating rules. A model supplies the uncertain time and location estimate. An assignment engine then applies restrictions and weighs idle time and empty travel across feasible options.
Operations receives recommendations and reports rather than a free-form answer. A dispatcher can consider the suggested match alongside the practical circumstances of the driver and shipment. The division of work makes it easier to ask a concrete question: is the availability estimate plausible, and does this next trip fit?
03 / The work
Reduce idle time between trips
The matching engine scores idle time and empty distance, and enforces certifications, agreement restrictions and operating rules. Reports show how opportunities are distributed across drivers.
04 / The work
Bring prediction and planning into the operation
Embedding Labs connected ingestion, model-assisted prediction, constrained matching, operational reports and an API surface into a planning capability.
The operational lesson is to begin with a decision people need to make. Better forecasts have value when they reach a planner with relevant constraints and enough context to act.
Driver retention was central to this project. We wanted to address the uncertainty between trips—the waiting, the uneven earning opportunities and the difficulty of knowing what comes next. Embedding Labs built a system that estimates when and where drivers will become available and recommends feasible assignments, taking operating restrictions, idle time and empty travel into account. It gives our dispatchers a clearer basis for planning ahead and understanding how opportunities are distributed across drivers, while keeping the final decision with our team.
The lesson
Make the next feasible trip visible earlier, then let the planner judge it in context.
